kids my age

June 29th, 2009

so i was sitting and was thinking about stuff and decided to blog about it.

i read an article about a kid trading his ipod for a walkman for a week and it got me thinking. people my age are very unique. right at the turn of a lot of things. i grew up with a walkman i had it back in the 90s now i have my trusty iPhone which replaced my iPod. im getting to see things go away and be replaced, all of which i managed to be a user of. VCRs as well. my kids will never have used one, its weird, they wont even have DVDs. even writing in a journal has turned into blogging. ill award you 10 points if you ever had to turn the tracking knob on your vcr. seriously. and being a film student gets me thinking about that as well.

i grew up with a 35mm SLR in my hand. which i still use today. i got it from my great grandfather who got it in japan sometime in the late 80’s or early 90’s. my photography teacher had to show people how to load a 35mm camera. i was like SERIOUSLY?! and these kids were only 2 years younger than me. or in one case was older as in mid to late 20’s. im getting to see film die. people ask me what the difference between film and video is when i mention i shoot on film in school they really dont understand. ive modernized though. i do have a DSLR and a HD video camera. but for convience only its still a treat to use my 35mm SLR. ill never be able to afford a motion picture film camera. ive shot on 35mm color reversal slide film. which kodak is no longer making as of recent. ive gotten the privilege to load 400′ loads of 35mm film into a magazine to be shot. who else does that? barely anyone. and that makes me sad that ill probably never get to do it again.

same thing with computers. as long as i can remember ive been using computers since my mom had a Tandy from Radio Shack. ive used DOS, every version of Windows starting at 3.1, and every apple os since i was in middle school with the colored imacs. Older people think young kids know how to use computers. that’s completely untrue. only people my age who had to use a computer know how. everyone else can load up a web browser and load up myspace, thats it. ive used 5 1/4 in floppies.

im sad. analog isnt bad. its just more expensive.

Liberating Jesse / Film Production 3

June 14th, 2009

we are a week into the shoot. its fun. twelve hour days. catering. craft services. just look at the pictures. its a film being shot on film whats cooler than that?

i love being on set its the best thing ever. ive had a chance to do so much. build sets, find hundreds of newspapers, take stills, be an extra, help mark with continuity, grip, etc. its hard work. im not the only one doing it. next time you watch any film. look at the credits ALL of them. that is what makes the industry. big name actors arent even half of it (thats not saying they dont work though). its the people behind the scenes busting their asses for 14 hours a day that make it happen.

ive had a chance to work on this set next to professionals like Brian Knox, Lee Donaldson, John Reynolds, and Jonathan Gaynor. its a great chance to learn and watch them work.

here look at these photos. and youll even see the local pros at work and future ones as well.

a week of pre production

June 5th, 2009

newspapersok so since there isnt much pre production for me to do that hasnt been done. ive been in the art department for the trident production 3 film “liberating jesse” the past week. ive been getting newspapers(lots and lots), ripping holes in jeans, buying fence, returning fence, buying other fence, making cardboard boxes, getting told they need to be a different color, making more cardboard boxes, etc. its been quite an experience. youll definately see pictures as the film progresses.

i start my job is script supervisior and set photographer next week (monday at 7am to be exact). mark (whos last name totally passes my brain at the time) is also script supervising with me. seeing as he is more experienced. ill be taking photos for continuity and promotional purposes. and helping mark.
